[Fix] IP Error 169.254 in Windows 10, 8 or 7

The IP address is the identity of our computer to access the network and enjoy everything it offers us, by default, when we acquire an Internet service through an ISP.

Now, there is a problem that happens to multiple users and is that the IP address is with the syntax 169.254.xx which affects its optimal navigation and with it all network tasks such as file transfer, connectivity between devices and more.

Some causes by which we can see this IP error are:

  • The DHCP server is temporarily unavailable.
  • The equipment isn’t ideally connected to the network.
  • The necessary connection permissions aren’t available.
  • The WiFi or Ethernet connection doesn’t work correctly.

Method #1: Uninstall Network Adapter

The controllers have been designed to allow the hardware elements to work correctly, but in certain cases, this can present several errors, so it is recommended to uninstall the network adapter and then, automatically, the operating system will load the new drivers, this helps to correct the error mentioned.

For this, Run (Winkey + R) the command compmgmt.msc and go to the Device Manager, in the section “Network adapters,” right click on the adapter where the IP failure occurs and select the option “Properties.”

Now, go to the “Driver” tab. There click on the button “Uninstall driver” and finally, reboot the system to apply the changes.

Method #2: Configure your Firewall

The Windows Firewall has been designed to protect the computer from incoming and outgoing connections that present some type of threat to the user.

The error of IP 169.254, can be created by the rules of the Firewall because the network interface creates an ad-hoc network independently.

To fix this, access to your Firewall and there reset the rules.

Method #3: Configure Your IP Address

A common cause of this type of error is a bad configuration, internal or external, of the IP address and its solution is to configure it again so that it takes the original values.

For this, Run (Winkey + R) the command:

ncpa.cpl

Right-click on your network adapter and select Properties.

Now, unmark the checkbox “Internet Protocol version 6“.

Click OK to save the changes.

Finally, open the command prompt as administrator and execute the following lines.

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

After this, restart Windows and check if this fixes the error.

Method #4: Restart DNS Client Service

For this, Run (Winkey + R) the command services.msc

Find the service “DNS Client,” right click on it and select the option “Restart” if it is available.

Method #5: Disable Fast Startup

To disable this, go to:

  • Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power options > Change what the power buttons do

Click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable” and deactivate the box “Turn on fast startup.”

Click on the “Save changes” button to finish.

Method #7: Run SFC

SFC (System File Checker) is a utility added in Windows through which a detailed analysis of the system file system is executed and if there are errors, proceed with its fix or recovery.

For this, open the Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following command:

sfc /scannow

Method #8: Reset IP Address & Network Mask

In case none of the above solutions help to correct this error, you can reset the values of the IP address and network mask.

For this, Run (Winkey + R ) the command:

ncpa.cpl

Right-click on your Network adapter and select Properties:

Now, uncheck the box “Internet Protocol version 6” and double click on “Internet Protocol version 4“.

Check the”Use the following IP address” box and define the following:

  • IP Address: 192.168.0.1
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway: Blank
  • Check the option “Obtain DNS server address automatically.”

Click on “OK” to save the changes.
