Windows 10 Update Stuck Solutions
But sometimes it will tell you that everything is okay when You know that this isn’t the case, or in the worst case, it will detect the errors, but it will not be able to fix them.
So on this post, I will show some ways to fix the Windows 10 update stuck error appears on your computer.
Method #1: Uninstall Updates
The first thing you should do is to uninstall the update that is getting you troubles on your computer. To do that, follow these simple steps:
First, press the key combination Winkey + I to open the Windows Settings, then go to Update & Security. On the left, click on the section Windows Update.
Now, on the right click on the option View update history then click on Uninstall Updates.
A new window will open where you will find all the updates you have installed, find the one with the problem and click on Uninstall.
Method #2: Restart Windows Update Services
One of the main reasons why Windows can’t fix errors is that the processes or services of the operating system are stuck so that restarting services completely, usually solve most problems.
The primary services related to Windows Update are usually the BITS and the cryptographic service of the system. First, you must stop them, for that open the Command Prompt with administrator rights.
To open it you can use the Windows search, right click on it and select Run as administrator. Then copy the following commands, one by one and press Enter.
net stop bits net stop wuauserv net stop appidsvc net stop cryptsvc
Now that you stopped them, it is necessary to start them again, so, in the same window, run the following commands:
net start bits net start wuauserv net start appidsvc net start cryptsvc
Once this is done, it is advisable to restart the system.
Method #2: Remove SoftwareDistribution folder
SoftwareDistribution folder is used by Microsoft to store the updates files.
When Window Update downloads an update, all temporary files are stored inside this folder.
In general, the WUAgent service is responsible for managing this folder and leaving it free when the Windows patches are finished, however, sometimes this folder isn’t cleared correctly, giving rise to numerous problems like the Windows 10 update stuck error.
These problems can be fixed over time, or maybe not, so, then, I will show you can manually empty this folder to try to solve the Windows 10 update stuck problem.
As I have said, this folder is usually controlled by the WUAgent service so that, if you try to modify it, it will not leave you.
Therefore, the first thing we must do to be able to modify it is to stop Windows Update completely. To do this, open a Command Prompt with administrator rights and run the following commands:
net stop wuauserv net stop bits
Once both services are stopped, the next step will be to go to the folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution from your file browser and delete all the files that you find in it.
If for some reason you still can’t delete these files, you must restart your computer (if it is in better fail-safe mode) and try again to disable Windows Update and delete the files.
Once the files are deleted, the problems should have disappeared. Now, you reopen a Command Prompt terminal with administrator rights and restart the following commands to start Windows Update and WUAgent.
net start wuauserv net start bits
Windows 10 will take over control of the folder and create the necessary files to run Windows 10 updates.
If you want, you can also change the name to this folder instead of deleting all its contents. To do this, once the two Windows Update services are stopped, run the following command in the Command Prompt:
rename %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
Then, start the two services again, and WUAgent will be responsible for re-creating the folder and downloading everything necessary for it to work usually.
The only thing you have to keep in mind is that, by doing this, you will lose the updates history installed in your operating system since they are stored in these files. In any case, the new updates installed on your Windows 10 system will continue to be registered without problems.
Method #4: Windows 10 Update Switcher
If any of the methods mentioned above help you to fix the Windows 10 update stuck error, you can disable Windows Updates entirely using a third party tool.
Windows 10 Update Switch is one of them, and it is also totally free and portable software so that you can take it to any Windows 10 computer.

Although it is possible that without making use of third-party apps you can block or delay this type of updates on the computer, this requires making some changes to the system registry or local group policies, depending on the version of Windows 10 that you have.
Therefore, for some users, this may be something that escapes them based on their knowledge and experience in Windows.
Therefore, it will be best to use a tool such as Windows 10 Update Switch, as it will help block the automatic download of system updates on the PC.
Precisely, this software does is control your network connection to dose their use in this type of actions. Specifically, it offers two options to control the automatic updates of Windows 10, one that allows blocking them by temporarily dosing your connection and another that does it permanently.
The first one allows you to control the bandwidth that the automatic download of Windows 10 updates will use, something significant if you have a slow Internet connection or want to prioritize other tasks. If you’re going to block automatic updates completely, then you should only activate that option from the Windows 10 Update Switch interface, which as you can see, is very simple.
