Windows 10 is an operating system that has been developed by Microsoft to be versatile and offer the end user the best features when executing multiple tasks of various kinds.

As many can happen to us, at any time the operating system can present failures.

Fortunately, the Microsoft developers gave us the solution to reinstall Windows 10 without losing data or file and allowing the system to return to its original state.

To carry out this task correctly we must have the original Windows 10 ISO or your Windows 10 on DVD or USB Stick, try to search for the same version that you have to be able to keep your data after the reinstallation.

Method #1: Reinstall Windows 10 using ISO

We must take into account that we must reinstall the same version of Windows, not a previous one because if we try to reinstall an earlier version, the option to keep the files will not be active:

There is only available the option Nothing with which everything will be erased.

To perform this process in Windows 10, we have two possibilities, the first from ISO image.

It’s not necessary to restart your computer using the ISO, search the file and right-click on it, then click on Mount

This will mount the ISO image in a virtual drive, and you can access their content.

The same process applies when you have Windows 10 on your DVD or USB

So, open the Windows 10 Drive and double click on setup.exe

First of all, we have the following options:

  • Download and install updates: This option allows Windows 10 to search for the latest available updates and download them before proceeding with the update.
  • Not right now: With this option, we can search updates manually later.

Click on Next and the assistant will start the process, checking your computer.

There, system version, disk and memory capacity, etc. are examined. Once the process end you need to accept the license terms:

Click on Accept to continue.

Now, we have the following options:

  • Keep personal files apps, and Windows settings: With this option, all the data on the system as well as the applications will remain after the reinstall.
  • Keep only personal files: With this option, you just keep your personal data (Documents, Videos, etc.).
  • Nothing: This option will completely remove all applications and files.

So, in this case, select Keep only personal files.

There a new checking process to backup your files. As soon as this process ends you will see a summary:

If we want to make a change, click on Change what to keep

To start the process of reinstalling Windows 10 click on the Install button and the respective process starts. Your computer will restart several times

Once reinstalled you can configure your computer as usual.

In this way, you reinstalled Windows 10 without losing data using the ISO, DVD or USB

Method #2: Reinstall Windows 10 using Settings

In Windows 10 we have the possibility to reinstall the operating system without losing data from the Settings utility in a simple way.

For this, go to the Start Menu, then click on Settings. You can also open Settings pressing the keys Winkey + I

There click on Update & Security, then on the left, select Recovery

There, click on the Get started button located in the Reset this PC section

Now, select the option Keep my files, which saves your personal files but removes the system’s settings and applications.

Click on Next, and you will see some warning:

Click on Next again and finally click on the Reset button to start the respective process.

With one of these options, you can reinstall Windows 10 without losing data safely and quickly.
