Your PS4 is downloading slow? Well, on this post I will show you some of the best tips to improve the PS4 slow download speed.
Ask a PlayStation 4 user what irritates you most about the Sony console, and most likely it will respond to the slow download speeds on the PlayStation Network.
With the current games taking up more and more space, some of them above 50GB, this problem is as real as it is annoying.
In this guide I will explain several tips and tricks to improve the speed of downloads on your PlayStation 4 when is running slow, freezing or lagging.
Note: Keep in mind that there is no reliable method one hundred per cent to speed up your PS4.
Your PlayStation 4 can connect to the internet through a wireless connection (Wi-Fi) or a direct cable connection (Ethernet) to the router or switch on your local network.
Method #1: Use Wired Connection
The best thing you can do to improve the PS4 slow download speed is, without a doubt, connect the console to the router using an Ethernet cable.
For some reason the console works much better with that type of connection, apart from being much faster in most situations: the PS4 Ethernet port is gigabit, which implies a maximum speed of 1000mb/s, while the Wi-Fi connection is 802.11b/g/n, with a maximum speed of 300mb/s.
If the router is near the console, you will not have any problems to connect the cable.
If the router, on the other hand, is in another room, you can try using a PLC (Power Line Communications) adapter, a device that allows you to use the wiring of your home’s electrical network to transmit data.
Houses with old electrical installations don’t usually give outstanding results when using PLCs, but for most of you, it will surely be an alternative to take into account, faster than opting for the wireless connection.
Method #2: Change DNS Settings
This solution has worked for some users, but I suspect more for a problem with the internet provider than with the console itself.
In any case, nothing is lost to prove it because there are a few documented cases of users who have seen improvements by replacing the DNS of their provider with generic Google.
You only need to follow these steps:
- Go to the “Settings” option in the main console menu.
- Select the “Network” option.
- Select “Set Up Internet Connection” from the following menu.
- Select Wi-Fi or LAN. Wi-Fi is the wireless connection, while LAN requires the use of a cable to connect to the network.
- Select “Custom” to enter the network options. It uses the following settings, the one related to DNS is the most important:
- IP address settings = Automatic
- DHCP hostname = Do not specify
- DNS Settings = Manual
- Primary DNS: 126.96.36.199
- Secondary DNS: 188.8.131.52
- MTU Settings = Automatic
- Proxy Server = Do not use
With the options changed, restart the PS4. If the problem were due to the DNS of your internet provider now, you would notice a speed increase when using those of Google.
Method #3: Rest Mode
This is one of the solutions that touch urban legends, but you don’t lose anything to try it. Many users swear and perjure that if downloads are made in Rest mode, they are usually a little faster than with the console turned on and functioning normally.
First, you have to go to the rest mode functions in Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Functions Available in Rest Mode. Check the “Stay connected to the internet ” option so that your console can make downloads while at rest.
Now press and hold the PS button to open the quick menu. Once opened, go to the Power option and choose “Enter Rest Mode”. Your console will shut down, but a low power mode will be maintained in which you will continue downloading data from the internet.
Hopefully, this trick will fix your PS4 slow download speed.
Method #4: Pause and Restart Download
This seems like a joke, but no. If you notice a speed that is too slow, try pausing and then start the download to get a higher rate.
There is no logical reason for this if I’m sincere, but in many cases, this trick works when accelerating the download of a game from the PlayStation Store or a patch.
To do this, you have to access the downloads in the notification menu, press the X to open the menu and select the pause option. Then press X again to reactivate it, and at the moment you will see how it goes faster than before.

So also make sure that you have a reliable internet connection in other devices to troubleshoot your slow download speed.
