Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 offers a broad new set of technologies, functions and services for the Exchange Server product line. Its goal is to help people and organizations in the evolution of their work habits from a communication-based approach to a collaborative approach.
At the same time, Exchange Server 2013 helps reduce the total cost of ownership whether you deploy Exchange 2013 locally or provision the mailboxes in the cloud.
What’s New in Exchange 2013
Compatibility with multigenerational staff: Social integration and simplification of the search for people are fundamental for users. Intelligent search learns from users communication and collaboration behaviours to improve and prioritize Exchange search results. Also, with Exchange 2013 users can merge contacts from multiple sources to provide a single view of a person, linking contact information taken from various locations.
Provide an engaging experience: Microsoft Outlook 2013 and Microsoft Outlook Web App have a renewed look. Outlook Web App emphasizes an effective user interface that also supports the use of touch capabilities, improving the experience on mobile devices with Exchange.
Integration with SharePoint and Lync: Exchange 2013 offers greater integration with Microsoft SharePoint 2013 and Microsoft Lync 2013 through local mailboxes and local electronic document display. Together, these products provide a set of features that enable situations such as the display of electronic documents of companies and the collaboration through site mailboxes.
Helps to adapt to the constant changes in the needs of regulatory compliance: The fulfilment and the exhibition of electronic documents suppose a challenge for many organizations. Exchange 2013 helps you search and find data not only in Exchange but throughout the organization. With enhanced search and indexing features, you can search Exchange 2013, Lync 2013, SharePoint 2013, and Windows file servers. Besides, data loss prevention (DLP) can also help protect the organization from users who mistakenly send confidential information to unauthorized persons. DLP enables you to identify, monitor and protect sensitive data thanks to more detailed content analysis.
Provide a flexible solution: Exchange 2013 is based on the architecture of Exchange Server 2010 and has been redesigned to provide greater simplicity of scale, hardware utilization, and error isolation.
Unified Messaging (UM) includes the same set of features as in Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2007, with some improvements and changes in the architecture. However, unified messaging is no longer a separate server role. It is now a component of the voice-related features offered in Exchange 2013.
Windows Server 2012 includes the .NET Framework 4.5 and Windows Management Framework 3.0 and does not need to be installed separately.
Ensure that the forest functional level is at least Windows Server 2003 and that the schema master is running Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 or later. For more information about Windows functional levels, see domain and forest administration.
The full installation option of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 must be used on all servers running Exchange Server management tools or server roles.
First, you must join the computer to the domain and internal forest of Active Directory. Some prerequisites require that you restart the server to complete the installation. Install the latest Windows updates on the computer.
