Are you having problems accessing some websites?

And more specifically, do you get the error ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH when entering websites that previously didn’t give you problems?

This error usually occurs in the Google Chrome browser.  And it can appear for different reasons

Is this the message that appears?:

A secure connection cannot be established because this site uses an unsupported protocol.

The client and the server don’t use the same version of the SSL protocol or encryption set. Usually, this happens when the server needs RC4, which is no longer considered secure.

Well, most of the time, it’s not a problem on your computer or your browser

Only the web in issue has poor security, and Google Chrome doesn’t want to access to protect you.

According to Google, the problem happens for this reason:

This error is presented if you try to access a website that has an old security code. Chrome prevents you from connecting to these websites to protect your privacy.

As you can see, if you try to access web and you see the ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH error, it is a problem of that web

If you can’t fix ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH error in any of these ways, please also let me know in a comment

Method #1: Don’t use Chrome

Use another browser

Like Mozilla Firefox in a version that hasn’t yet removed the support for the RC4 encryption

I leave here the download link for Firefox 32.0.3  (It seems that firefox works with SSLv3 until version 34)

Download from here Firefox 32.0.3

Remember that not using a browser in its most up-to-date version can be dangerous because you will not have the latest protection against attacks or online infections

The error appears in Google Chrome and other browsers that are no longer supported

Because these Internet browsers have  problems with some security protocols

So if you access the torrents download website from another browser, you will no longer have the error ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

This seems to be the solution that gives the best results to users

Method #2: Maximum TLS Version

Access the address that I leave here:

Select this entire address, and copy it to your browser:  chrome://flags/#ssl-version-max

Do not touch anything you don’t know

Now, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the drop-down menu, choose the option “TLS 1.2”
  2. At the bottom, you can see a Relaunch Button so click on it.
  3. Your Google Chrome browser will relaunch automatically
  4. If you want to make sure, restart your computer too
  5. Try to access the web that gave you problems

Method #4: QUIC Protocol

Copy and paste this address in your Google Chrome browser:  chrome://flags/#enable-quic

And follow these steps:

  1. Click on the drop-down menu, and choose the option Disabled
  2. Click on the RELAUNCH NOW button at the bottom to save the changes
  3. Your Google Chrome browser restart
  4. If you want to make sure, restart your computer too
  5. Try to access the web that gave you the error

If you still get the error ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH, look at the following methods.

Method #5: Multiple

Some options that have helped users sometimes. You can try them and see if they help you

Although I have already made it clear to you at the beginning, it is probably the web you are trying to access.

Update Windows to the Latest Version

And make sure you install all the latest updates

This is important because some of these installations carry root certificates that are installed in the system

And they can solve the problem you’re having with your browser

Update time and date of your computer

They may be causing problems because the computer detects that the security certificate is expired

Clear Cookies and Browser cache

And there are cases where it has worked

To clear the cookies and browser cache, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome and press the following keys: Ctrl + Shift + Del
  2. On the window that opens select All time in Time range
  3. Finally, click on Clear Data

Method #6: Antivirus

If you use Avast, Bitdefender or any other antivirus, access your settings and try to disable SSL protection.

Some antivirus tries to protect you from access less secure website, so first to check if your antivirus is blocking sites, disable it temporarily.

avast disable antivirus
