A Clean Installation of Windows 10 can be a good idea when you have suffered some significant problem with your operating system, such as a malware infection, or when you begin to notice that the performance of your computer has declined considerably and you don’t have a reasonable explanation.
Microsoft is also aware of its importance and therefore has simplified the process necessary to complete a clean install of Windows 10. In this article, I will explain all the steps you must take in three methods.
When you do a clean install of Windows 10, the system deletes the previous installation, which means that all the data and files disappear.
Therefore, it is essential to follow a series of prior actions:
- Make sure to back up your files and data, or you will lose them.
- Check that you can reinstall all the apps you had installed.
- Have product licenses and keys handy, since once you reinstall Windows 10, you may have to re-activate specific apps and tools.
- Once you have completed those three steps, you will be ready to complete a clean install of Windows 10.
Method #1: Clean Install using Windows 10 Settings
If Windows 10 is already correctly activated on your computer, you can make a clean install of the operating system, erasing all the current contents of the hard disk. It is worth saying that before that you must make a backup copy of all the files you want to keep.
Now, to make a clean install of Windows 10 press the key combination Winkey + I to open Windows Settings. Go to the section Update & Security and then to Recovery. Then on the left click on the button Get started under the section Reset this PC.
A box like the following will appear, in which you have to choose the option Remove everything.
Finally, you have to wait. The final result will be a completely new Windows 10 installation and activated forever.
Method #2: Clean Install of Windows using USB
You can easily make a clean install of Windows 10 using the Settings, but if you prefer doing in the old way, I will show you how to do it.
For this, you may need to make a backup also, but also remember to check the following information from your PC:
Your Windows 10 Edition and Architecture. You can find this information on Windows Settings, then go to System, on the left navigation to the section About and on the right you can find your Edition and architecture:
Now you have to download this tool from Microsoft, and once you run it you will see the following window:
In which you have to choose the second option: Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and press Next, and you will be asked to select the language, architecture and edition, or you can check the option Use the recommended options for this PC:
Now will be asked to choose between creating an installation USB flash drive, or an ISO file. If you select the ISO image, then you will have to burn it to a DVD. Windows 10 allows you to do this without resorting to external software, so you should right click on the file, and select Burn.
It only remains to restart the computer and boot from the DVD or USB drive, start the clean install of Windows 10.
Method #3: Microsoft Refresh Windows
Microsoft Refresh Windows is a utility that can you can download from Microsoft website, and that allows you to perform a clean install of Windows 10.
Thanks to Microsoft Refresh Windows you will only need access to a browser to carry out a clean installation of Windows 10. You will not specify any external means or access to any other application.
The first step before using Microsoft Refresh Windows is that you must bear in mind that when using it you will remove all apps that are not integrated with Windows, including other Microsoft apps such as Office.

Once downloaded the file with extension .exe click on it to execute it and accept the downloaded, double click on it to run it.
After accepting the End User License Agreement (EULA), the program offers you the option to keep your personal files, create a backup copy or nothing.
The Windows Update Tool will then be downloaded, and it will begin to update the computer while displaying the OOBE screen that guides you step by step through the process.
Once finished, you find a totally clean install of Windows 10 with contents that are foreign to it, which will be customized to suit your needs.
